"Practice" Practice

"Be warm and demanding."  - Brad Stevens

Even when we spend time thinking about practice and working to improve both teaching (know that) and execution (know how), it can always be better. Worse yet, with limited facilities, vacation, or snow days, missed practices are missed opportunities.

Do you have specifics for every part of every practice?

I want every player to leave practice knowing she is a better player than when she arrived.

Every practice should be a self-contained clinic.

Every activity should translate directly to game play.

I want every practice to spend at least a third on shooting, ideally competitively. It's never "good enough."

Drills and scrimmages should condition independently.

Quiz during breaks. "What do we mean by that?"

Regardless of the amount of time available, the tempo should be high.

We can provide negative feedback constructed positively. "We can do better when we do it this way."

Players need to learn both self-regulation (with self-awareness) and mutual encouragement every session.

Players need to hear validating statements about their self-worth and especially about effort when earned.
