Knight Moves

Bob Knight explains how to read and react to screens.

  • Coach Knight shows how he wants set
  • Some coaches want screens to be set via an angle cut
  • Coach demonstrates four key elements of the read and react: the curl, back cut off defender 'cheat', 'bump' to the corner, and screen slips
  • Setting screens sets opportunity for BOTH players. The screener is often the player most open.
Cutters need to set up their cut to come off the screen and leave no space. Some coaches teach the cutter to turn the screener into the play by grabbing their shirt.

Key point: screens are neither mechanically set or used, proper interpretation of the defensive response informs passer, cutter, and screener.
