Basketball: Notes from Overinvest in Culture

Culture defines us. Culture is part of our brand. Everyone should understand "who we are and who we are not." Steve Kerr discusses MINDSET, MENTORS, and CULTURE as the foundation of the Warriors. Here's an outstanding interview with Kerr about team culture.

In his MasterClass, Howard Schultz counsels students to overinvest in culture

He defines culture as "understanding human behavior and...how to elevate a group of people to realize, believe, and trust...each person...has a responsibility to shaping the behavior of the organization."

What is your culture? Have we explicitly shared it? Our team prioritizes "teamwork, improvement, and accountability." Accountability includes making good decisions on and off-court. Good choices include understanding good shot and pass selection and taking care of the ball. It's always a work in progress with room for growth.

"Every day you are defining the culture of the company." Kevin Eastman says it another way, "Fight for your culture every day."

He uses the analogy of raising a child and teaching her to walk. "You are imprinting (the culture)...with a set of values." "You never shame a child."

Using the mental model of inversion, he advises us to attend to occurrences "not consistent with the values of our company."

Building a brand means establishing trust "with your people and your customers." In team sport, our customers include the entirety of our extended family...parents, fans, and the community.

"...very healthy to do a cultural audit." Ask questions about the culture and values of the company. "Have an honest conversation about who we are and how we are."

"Bring people in from outside the company." Starbucks often brings in authors to share their expertise.

"How are we going to live...a set of standards? (Work-Life Balance)

"...a humane work environment that is performance driven." Understand that work only comprises part of any person's total experience.
