Basketball: Fast Five - Rock Steady

Sometimes we feel like Sisyphus, condemned for craft and deceit to roll a giant rock uphill for eternity. Some say he had stolen secrets from the gods and others say he literally put Death in chains. His punishment symbolized eternal futility. Coaching has Sisyphean moments.

As a player, go rock the house. Bring energy, energize your teammates, and the fans. Turn the fans on. You play, you perform. Bring urgency to your role. Be the most interesting 12th guy in the league. "Make the big time where you are."

Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich says, "Pound the rock." If it takes a hundred hits to break the rock, then you hit it a hundred times. You can't skip steps. Shortcuts don't play. You gotta keep pounding. Choices, willingness to do the work, define you.

Shoot the rock. Teams that can't shoot don't succeed in contemporary basketball. Bad form, poor shot selection, not enough practice, and poor quality practice reap rubbish results.
              n
R = F X P      (results = frequency x practice to the nth degree (quality of practice)

Be rock steady. Rock steady means predictable and reliable. Habits are the product of a cue, action, and reward.

Lagniappe: Rocker step, of course.

Most people call this "jab and go" now.
