Basketball: EYES OPEN. Becoming a Better Player (Coach)

"It's a life of observance." - Samuel L. Jackson in MasterClass

From MasterClass.com, Samuel L. Jackson Teaches Acting

Keep your eyes open. Be eclectic. Imagine yourself in a different situation. Watch for exceptional behavior or achievement. What made it exceptional?

Awhile back we were on a Southwest flight back from Atlanta and one flight attendant repeatedly asked, "Let me know if you need anything." That was his open door policy.

See how leaders interact with followers, both positively and negatively. How do you keep others engaged? Can you give yourself an honest assessment? David Mamet says a key rule of writing is, "Don't be boring."

Find ways to recharge. To inspire, be inspired. I start every day with MasterClass, especially those of writers, actors, and directors shares excellence. Rewatch exceptional lessons.

Read. Very few jobs require no reading or continuing education. Reading takes us to other fields, other worlds, other times. Do you know about the General Who Never Lost? Against superior numbers he said, "we are here to fight, not to count."

Watch women's games, FIBA games, individual highlights. What made a highlight or player special? What footwork, deception, or ball movement made the play? What did the defense do or not do?

Lagniappe: Be hard to defend with hard-to-defend actions.
For examples, consider:
- Screen the screener
- DHO into secondary screen
- Screen the roller (Spain pick-and-roll)
- Pick-and-roll to set up back cuts from the corner
