Basketball: Elegance Follows Simplicity, Joy of Movement

"Simplicity doesn't mean you haven't thought it through." - Alice Waters

Thinking makes life easier. Pearls are lying around to be harvested.

"Movement kills defenses." Ball movement makes quality shots happen. Pete Carril reminds us, "the quality of the shot relates to the quality of the pass."

Find the unexpected.

"Basketball is a game of separation."

- Get separation with and without the ball.
- Cutting creates separation.
- Screens create separation.
- Speed and quickness create separation.
- Fakes create separation.
- Mastery of a few moves beats mediocrity of many. For example, Sabrina Ionescu has devastating hesitation moves with either hand.

Without the ball, read:

- Does the defender see me? Some are head turners or lazy.
- Is the defender overcommitted, e.g. slip or back cut?
- Can a teammate make the pass? Does she see me?
- Can I make space or take advantage of space?
- Change direction, speed, or both?

Innovation marries simplicity

"Imagination leads to innovation that leads to differentiation." - Bill Russell
Lagniappe: Teaching the step-back

I will make a slight modification (outdoors), using chalk. Reducing injury is always a priority and I don't want a child to slip on plastic.
