Basketball: Bus Analogies Apply to Collaborative Coaching

It's not about the bus. It's about passengers, different and special.

Jim Collins wrote, People are not your most important asset.  The right people are.”  He added that leaders "get the wrong people off the bus."

The late Jack Welch emphasized five qualities for team leaders, our bus drivers:

- Positive energy
- Energizing others
- Decision-making courage
- Execution
- Passion

Jon Gordon's The Energy Bus extends the bus analogy, saying "no energy vampires allowed."

The bus driver doesn't control the schedule or which passengers choose to get on the bus. But she controls how she drives the bus, how she treats the passengers. "You can’t control who gets on your bus. Sometimes it will be people you like a lot – people who are quite pleasant, or just quiet. Sometimes it will be people who grumble or criticize or try to tell you how to do your job."

There's a lot to be said for being a good driver. Serve and remember, "Drivers don't have the right to throw people under the bus."

Summary:

It's not about the bus.
- "People are not your most important asset.  The right people are."
- "Get the wrong people off the bus."
- Control how you drive the bus.
- Have positive energy and energize others.
- Don't throw people under the bus.
