Basketball: 1-3-1 (Not What You Think)

1-3-1. One drill, three concepts, one play.

Design toughness. Everything translates. Almost fifty years ago, we practiced "pressure free throws," four rounds of ten. The pressure? Your partner could say anything, do anything except interfere with the shot. The artistic genius of high school boys runneth over. Usually it took 38 or 39 to win. The winner faced off against the coach for suicides or not.

DRILL: Competent teams beat pressure. GAUNTLET provides four levels of pressure. The goal is to advance the ball and score. Limit one dribble per each catch. Defenders rotate forward, offense goes to the back quarter of the court to defend.

CONCEPTS:

1. Ball reversal breaks down defenses. Ball reversal distorts defenses and forces closeouts. Know how to reverse it - over, around, through.

2. "WAIT, WAIT, WAIT." Even good players have trouble waiting for screens. Tell yourself, "WAIT, WAIT, WAIT." And set up your cut.

3. Pivoting is undertaught. Front pivot (chest leads) and back pivot (backside leads)...we work on this every practice with box drills against defense. Protect the ball.

PLAY: Zipper Iso

Many teams use a zipper cut to initiate a play, either from SLOB or from sets. Use the zipper to clear the elbow and isolate a scorer.

Practice should translate. Every activity should improve us. Coach Leonzo gives examples.
