Basketball: More Zeljko Obradovic (FIBA Drills)

Learn from the best coaches around the world, like Zeljko Obradovic.

He emphasizes concentration in everything. Without communication, all teams underachieve. And defensively, everything starts with containment

If you watch the video, notice the fundamental concentration and rare mistakes during the drills or the play. The screeners consistently open to the ball.

Build skills.

Repeat penetration and pullups.

Reading and relocating shooting drill

Baseline drive and drift. He starts with penetration and wing pass. Insist on "high speed" action. Positions are interchangeable.

Two-sided PnR (cone is imaginary). Progression is PnR jumper (R) and pick-and-pop (L)

Against Ice/Blue defense, wants ballhandler to initiate play more from the middle to limit
potential for defensive trapping.

Against Ice/Blue/Side PnR defense, Obradovic teaches screen with backside that allows easier vision for roller throughout! Key for bigs to have reliable perimeter game.

Progression for ballhandler is drive (e.g. middle) against "under" with rescreen and change of direction into either shot or drive. The decisions are built into the drill.

Full court, new wrinkle, REBOUND battle. He wants the perimeter players making shots

The smart perimeter player blocks out early (farther from basket). "Fight for the ball.

Coach O loves the early PnR game, so they work on it. They "sequence" the 3 on 0 drill next with the defense playing Blue/Ice/Side PnR and then "under" using rescreening.

They use the same 3 on 3 transition "chase" drill (x1 takes 3 steps in) we do, but vary it to disallow dribbling. Discourage "early" pass in the frontcourt to force a 2-on-1 situation.

Understand what you want from 3-on-3 practice:
- Pass-and-go
- PnR
- Off-ball screen

"EVERY situation the small details make the difference."

Showed reading the defense on the off-ball screen with a wrinkle of the curl into PnR. HARD to defend. Or the 5 could set the cross and then back screen.

"Don't think every time you score it's good offense. Maybe it's bad defense."

There's more, but that's a hefty dose for one session.
