Basketball: Set Up Isolations to Get the Odds on Our Side

Don't apply NBA statistics to our team. Maybe we have a dynamite post player or an uncontainable guard getting to the rim. Or maybe a wing with superior one-on-one skills. How do we set up isolations?

Simple is better. Wyc Grousbeck introduced my wife Ellen (the rocket scientist) to Brad Stevens. Coach Stevens answered, "it's not rocket science." The ability to win one-on-one battles often separates extraordinary from other players.

"Great offense is multiple actions."

1. Open a gap (above).

2. Horns Stagger Iso (multiple options available). I'm partial to having isolation as the second option (gets more players involved instead of watching).

3. Tufts Backdoor Clear. Make isolation the second option.

4. Horns cross screen... always remember Jay Bilas' Toughness advice, "set up your cut."

An alternative is to look first for the lob.

5. Box Isolation...occupy the weak side with a flare screen.

Lagniappe. Practice fast to play fast.

Lagniappe 2. Think in bets. Probability teaches us the improbable will happen.

Start with a thousand people with a penny, flip and sit the tails flippers. Each flip about half will flip tails and the "heads" flippers remain. After ten flips, one "lucky" flipper "wins." She might say, "I knew today was different. The pancakes tasted better," or some such nonsense.

But events based on probability don't prove special talent.

What's your plan to "stand out" or "separate yourself" at tryouts?
