Fortune Cookie Lesson, Separate Excellence from Competence

Inspiration surrounds us.

"The weakest part of the Chinese menu is dessert." Yet, fortune cookies come from Japan! Cookies impart lessons. What should move up from the back burner? Find your answer.

"Be good at what you do a lot." That doesn't mean mediocrity in the rest. Teach young players that winning a few extra possessions separates excellence from competence.

Heed Mano Watsa's advice, "Don't major in the minors" with drills or strategies that expend disproportionate time (McCormick's Fake Fundamentals). Find the Goldilocks issues that aren't A-listers or time sucks.

The analogy comes from Warren Buffett. Expand a list of possibilities and focus on critical points. Here are ten that omit other important actions like applying and defeating pressure, offensive and defensive delay, off-ball defense, improving net rebounding, forcing turnovers, etc. Yes, many overlap.

Necessity forces economists to study allocation of scarce resources (time/repetitions).

Ideally, work on multiple areas simultaneously.

  1. Live shell drill against pressure defense (include and vary on and off-ball screens)
  2. Special situations via O-D-O (three possession games starting with a special)
  3. Four vs. four half-court offense with limited dribbles per touch
  4. Scrimmages with "shot quality" scoring
  5. Full court, full pressure advantage-disadvantage (e.g. 5 vs. 7)

How are your top players separating themselves today?

  • Strength and conditioning (become more explosive - see Lagniappe)
  • Three level finishing ("repetitions make reputations")
  • GO TO and COUNTER edges
  • Mindfulness increases focus
  • Game knowledge

4 Game winner options off 1-4 low.

Summary:
  • Inspiration is everywhere.
  • Win this possession.
  • "Don't major in the minors."
  • Make better choices.
  • Ranking secondary priorities is tough.
  • Core practice activities teach offense, defense, competition
  • How does your top player separate herself?
  • A simple set finds four ways to win.

Lagniappe (something extra). The shot sets up the drive. The drive sets up the shot. Lillard's full bag with rejected screens, explosion to the rim, and draw 2 and pass.
