Coaching Analogies - Film Directing and Editing, Cooking, Being a Band, and Investigative Journalism

Power up with analogies. Other domains share valuable perspectives that work every day.

Film directing

  • Ron Howard says, "the director is the keeper of the story." Own keeping  focus and improving by advancing the story. Make players better and the play better through attention to detail in all areas.
  • Mira Nair reminds us to have "the soul of a poet and the skin of an elephant." Both imagination and toughness matter.
  • Martin Scorsese is aware of his mortality“Often, death is sudden. If you’re given the grace to continue working, then you’d better figure out something that needs telling.” We all need a 'why'.

Editing

  • Ron Howard teaches, "the film is made in the editing room." Include the necessary needs and discard the fluff. Succeed in transition and stopping transition, in winning the half-court battles, and containing pick-and-roll offense. If practice doesn't advance the end, then "kill your darlings." For example, in transition have specific assignments for how many to the offensive glass, responsibility for floor balance, and shape up teaching.
  • Dan Brown (The DaVinci Code) says, "the difference between good writers and bad writers is that good writers know when they're bad." Self-assessment requires brutal honesty. Talking a good game is a losing game. When we're bad, win the room before winning games. Film study is the truth machine.

Cooking

  • "All cooking is about time and temperature." - Thomas Keller    Improvement takes time and intensity. Lukewarm commitment won't yield red hot results.
Jon Gordon shares thoughts on commitment

1. Commit to Giving 100%
2. Commit to Getting Better
3. Commit to Staying Positive
4. Commit to the Team’s Mission
5. Commit to Each Other - Serve!

Putting Together an Album
  • Metallica talks about the need for balance and the primacy of success. Forty years as a team spawns, "What's best for the project" the musical equivalent of "what's best for the team?"

Investigative Journalism: Getting to the Story

  • Bob Woodward looks for the "best available version of the truth." Coaches seek the best version of our teams. Shot charts, effective field goal percentage (EFG%), turnovers, and assists all help tell a story. Woodward works to find and thresh out information from reliable source.
Lagniappe. Structure (spacing), ball and player circulation lead to the scoring opportunity.
