Basketball: Your Number One Job as a Player or a Coach

"Make those around you better."

With high school tryouts in full force in the local area (Massachusetts), remind players about auditions and being your best self. Be specific as to what that means. "I'm looking for players who make teammates better, who compete, and want excellence on the court and in the classroom."

As coaches, we choose whether to inspire or to lead by fear (image from MasterClass, Bill Nye).

Sam Jackson shares key advice. "Control what you can control."

Coaches know what we're looking for.

  • Added value.
  • "Leave an impression."
  • What is your unique skill or contribution?
  • Have energy and energize teammates.
  • Don't cheat the drill.
  • Be a great teammate. Talk. Thank the passer. Help teammates up.
What stands out at tryouts?
  • Extreme effort ("plays like her hair's on fire")
  • Giving up the body (hit the floor, set solid screens, take a charge)
  • Playmaking
  • Talking on defense
  • Getting to the front of the line in drills/activities
  • Crisp passing
  • Players who follow direction (take coaching)
Favorite tryout activity/drill?
  • 3-on-3 (halfcourt, multiple evaluators)
  • Shell drill (4 v 4) into live attack
  • High volume shooting

Lagniappe (something extra).

Finishing ability and the capacity to draw fouls are highly valued.

Lagniappe 2. Bill Nye (the Science Guy) shares wisdom which encourages him to respect everyone he meets:

Great ideas can come from anywhere.
