Basketball Post 2995: Threes Are Wild - Where Do Threes Arise?

Threes changed the sport. But it took decades. But without shooters, they're a hindrance. And threes are only one component of total offense.

Here are some approaches to set up three pointers:

  • Pick and Pop
  • PnR Corner 3 (or with lift)
  • Inside outside (short roll)
  • Drive and sink (or hammer)
  • Screen the Screener (e.g. Winner)
  • Elevator Screens
  • Staggers (e.g. Portland)
  • Simple screen (America's Play)
I haven't even attempted to show threes in transition.

When the big plays 'drop coverage' the Pop opens (below).

Corner three or corner lift are strong options (below).

Agressive coverage opens short roll into a perimeter pass three (below).

One example of Hammer action.

We've won with Winner. The opening clip (below) shows Flexish action for a Curry three.

Elevator screens present defensive challenges. Instead of a sequential screen (e.g. for 3), we could shut the elevator doors. GSW with examples below.

Staggered screens (remember the Lillard/Portland game winner?) are another challenge.

I call it "America's Play" because every team in America uses some version of it.
