Coaching isn't like a rollercoaster. It is one. And it's far more than the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
Plateaus mark nonlinear growth. Ask "what does our team need now?"
Don't expect consistency from young players. Ups and downs are the norm in every game and every season. We won't eliminate a player's fears. We manage them.
Energy comes and goes. Coaches, bring energy every day. Positivity is a 'safety belt' that keeps players engaged during declines and sharp curves. Everyone needs appreciation. Players have to hear, "I believe in you."
Practice takes us up the coaster, allowing us to release kinetic energy as performance.
Comparison stifles progress. "It's not Six Flags." It frustrates players who compare themselves to more athletic or skilled teammates. Most people struggle with happiness for other's success. Competition inspires competitors. Be challenged not intimidated by excellence.
Control the peaks and troughs of the rollercoaster. Skill development smooths the ride. Timeouts during games calm frayed nerves. Knowledge fuels more curiosity. Maturity informs less judgment.
Anson Dorrance calls for "continual ascent." Coach Wooden reminded players to "make each day your masterpiece." Focus on becoming our better version because the ride is over before we know it.
