Movies and Basketball Analogy, Support Epic Scenes with Situations and Characters

Great movies have three to seven epic scenes. According to director Ron Howard, the surrounding scenes build situations and characters to support them. Coaching shares similarities.

Build situations.

  • Transition (what's your strategy?)...Hoiberg speed drill
  • Core actions (e.g. spread, motion, pistols, horns, etc.)
  • Special situations (ATO, BOB, SLOB) - zipper, give-and-go, feed the roller
  • Half-court defense - goal: "one bad shot"
  • Pressure - excellent teams apply and withstand it

Survive pressure 2 vs 8 in four zones...one dribble allowed each touch. Defenders rotate up and offense goes to defense if ball turned over.

Build characters (player development)

  • Win one vs one situations (both offense and defense)
  • Ball screen offense and defense (see Lagniappe below)
  • Roster building - 2 ballhandlers, 3+ scorers, 2 dominant rebounders
  • Coaching staff (lead, teach, and delegate)
  • Shooting versatility
Lagniappe. Classics are classic for reasons. Legends teach us. Reading and video study stimulate new ideas or adaptations of old ones.

Lagniappe 2. Quote from Jocko Willink, "Extreme Ownership"

"For leaders, the humility to admit and own mistakes and develop a plan to overcome them is essential to success. The best leaders are not driven by ego or personal agendas. They are simply focused on the mission and how best to accomplish it."
