Saturday "Second Helping" Basketball: Hands Drills


"Basketball is...a game of passing and cutting." But that also implies catching. Catching isn't a given and we've all seen players who are better or worse at catching. Watching players fumble passes drives coaches crazy. 

Share your ideas on helping players develop better catching skills. Changing up drills engages players. "Variety is the spice of life."

1. Ultimate. Play five on five full court with no dribbling. The ball hits the floor it's a turnover with play immediately going the other way. Got twelve 'guys'? Go six on six. 

2. Racehorse. Full court, full speed (that's a challenge) passing, cutting, and finishing drill. Change passers every minute. 


There's no whip but coaches exhort players, "Go, go faster." 

3. Two ball, two line passing. To spice it up, you can add a no-bounce, weighted basketball or even a medicine ball. 


4. Catch and pass on the move with Argentina (half-court). Allegedly, there were fights over NOT starting in the corner full-court. 



5. "Houston" One-minute passing.


6. "Indiana" 4 on 4 half-court, no dribbling. Full pressure defense and offense must pass and cut or screen. Add constraints like ten passes before scoring. 

7. Three-ball tennis ball juggling. Learn how to juggle because everyone needs to deal with more "balls in the air. I learned in college (the value of an Ivy League education) from a dorm mate who had been in the circus!
  

8. 1-on-1-on-1 (three players). Multiple baskets. Coach shoots to start the game and then it's on. All shots, including made baskets are live balls. Play a game to THREE or to FIVE. It's a hands, finish, and toughness drill.
