Basketball: "Change My Mind"

Steal great ideas and concepts from other coaches and sports. Michael Lombardi shares his Patriots prototype of "change my mind," a familiar name - Malcolm Butler. Butler went from undrafted free agent to Super Bowl hero.

The concept is analogous to Professor Adam Grant's Think Again. Grant advises us to keep a "rethinking scorecard" to document our openness and experience in changing beliefs.

It recalls Michael Lewis's Moneyball misvaluation, where Oakland "bought wins via buying or preventing runs" with Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford the poster boys of undervalued players.

I've shared a conceptual framework of roster analysis:

  • Lottery picks
  • First rounders
  • Second rounders
  • Street free agents
Draft and/or develop talent to upgrade rosters. What players get mislabeled in the perception versus production metric?

Here are some examples:
  • Bruce Bowen - three time NBA champion, eight time first or second All-NBA Defensive Team, prototype "3 and D" player
  • Shane Battier - two time NBA champion, twice second team All-NBA Defensive Team
  • Derrick White - 29th pick NBA draft, NBA champion, twice All-NBA Defensive team, Olympic gold medalist
  • Dwight Howard - widely underappreciated, NBA Champion, 8 time All-Star, 8 time All-NBA, 3-time NBA Defensive PoY
