Basketball: Play with Purpose, Dribbling

Find something to use, to teach, to build into your program. I am the authority on nothing, but share relentlessly.

1. "Make the dribble take you somewhere," advance, escape, attack, set up better passing angles...and always protect the ball.

2. "You don't get paid by the dribble." The ball has energy, so move it.

3. In a group, warm up with dribble tag inside the arc. Add constraints, e.g. only non-dominant hand, every third dribble a crossover or between-the-legs.

4. Crossover the ball on the shoe tops. Don't expose the ball to hungry defenders.

5. Learn to score at the basket with one dribble from the arc.

6. Find 'actionable drills' for your use.

7. Don't automatically catch and put the ball on the floor. Don't decrease your options.

8. Work on dribble "pick ups" to get the ball into your shot pocket from the dribble. Just one example...

9. Captain Obvious, "Keep your head up."

10.Be economical with the dribble. Klay Thompson scored 60 points...with 11 dribbles.

Bonuses:
  • Learn specialty dribbles like escape dribbles and snake dribbles.
  • Kyrie Irving practiced his handle with a basketball in a plastic bag.
  • Create separation via "change of direction and change of pace."
  • Saw one girl who got amazing separation solely with crossovers and hesitation (old school).
  • Shoulders down...low man wins.
