Improving Practice Through Adding Randomness

hat tip: Brooke Kohlheim

Notes:

How do we translate practice into a) read b) plan c) do ? Effective practice helps teach players to read (see the game) before execution.

"Every time we do a sport we have to read, plan, and do."

Block practice is traditional...

Random practice 'randomizes' reps...e.g. varying location and distance of shots

Study (1979)..."random group retained the gains from practice...we saw almost double the improvement in the random group as compared to the block group"

We need to "find a different way to track improvement."

Block practice eliminates the "reading and planning" which are critical elements.

Random practice incorporates the reading and planning.

The random approach will create ugliness but improve game functioning. "Do you want to look good in practice or look good in a game?"
