Fast Five: The Shot Fake

Shooting practice demands multiple 'deliveries' including deception. Shot fakes help create separation via "fly bys" (defenders running by), defensive overcommitment opening drives, and through defensive fouls.

Start by defining for players: "A shot fake is a shot not taken.

"This is NOT a duck." The shot fake must be a reasonable copy of your shot.

Slower is better. Eyes must see the rim. Quiet your feet.

I think Kelly Olynyk has the best shot fake in The Association.

Remember Coach Wooden's process: explanation, demonstration, imitation, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition.

Avoid the pitfalls. Traveling prevention is critical. I teach slow hands, quiet feet and recommend the player not elevate the ball above the head. There is evidence that officials call more travels the higher the ball is raised on the fake.

There's an old adage "never foul a jump shot." Not enough players listen and they often foul off the pump fake.
