Basketball: Timeless Advice Fostering Winning

Simplify. Add value. Find underrated truths.

Break success into small pieces. Coach Sonny Lane preached "win this quarter." Keep winning quarters and good things happen.

Recommendation: Become even more granular. "Win this possession."

Play harder for longer. Coach Dave Smart notes that excellent teams "play harder for longer." Don't get bored with playing hard.

Rec: Condition within drills.

Attention to detail. Coach John Wooden said, "little things make big things happen."

Rec: Obsess the product. Footwork. Free throws. Physical development.

Help! You want to be a great player? Great players make everyone around them better. Few great players are bad teammates.

Rec: Ask - how can I be the best possible teammate? As coaches, how can we promote team - what are your team-building exercises? Coach K discussed team dinners in his MasterClass.

Share. Remember the lessons from Robert Fulghum's Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Or simplify with Phil Jackson's, "Basketball is sharing." Shared vision, shared sacrifice, shared results.

Rec: Share the ball willingly, talk more on defense.

Study. Learn every day.

Rec: 1) Watch basketball video every day. 2) Study greatness - players and coaches. 3) Read widely.

Get everyone on the same page. Have a vision, share it, and get feedback.

Rec: Verbal is good; written is better

Lagniappe. This is a "closer in" version of our "Quarterback layups" drill from the three-point line. The emphasis of finishing through contact off two feet appeals to me.

Lagniappe 2. Intoxicating. Inspiring.
