Basketball: Player Development, "One Stop Shopping"

"Repetitions make reputations."

No "One Stop Shopping" exists for player development. But even the grind needs direction. Finish plays on offense and defense. Survey what's possible.

Warm up. Recently, I shared for the nth time the Villanova "Get 50" shooting warmup. Here, I'll repost another:

The Elden Campbell

Three integrated pressure elements: Competition, accuracy, time.

Elden Campbell had a pregame routine where he made five consecutive shots from five different spots. Our players aren't at that level of competence. Add degrees of difficulty by taking the fewest possible shots and the least possible time. Adding time constraints builds conditioning and "clutch" genes. Track your personal best.

Getting to the rim. Maybe you're so fast you can take a defender off the dribble at will. But if not, get a separation advantage with change of pace and/or change of direction. Master hesitation, crossover, and combinations.

Finishing school. Finish with either hand on either side of either (or both feet). Starting with box drills (self-flip back to the basket) finish with one dribble, working to both sides of the rim.

Basketball moves. Pick entrees off the menu.

Out-quick the defense off the catch.

Choose two Olajuwon moves, e.g. a base move and a counter. Better to have a couple of signature moves than a quiver of faulty arrows.

Box drills (Introduction). Front pivot, reverse pivot into shots or basket attack to either side.

Paul Pierce Wing Series

Score or create off the dribble from the wing. Yes, it's a repeat.

Carmelo Anthony jab series. (Another repeat)

This two-minute video is a keeper. Again, choose a couple to master

Reminder - there are no shortcuts to mastery.

Summary:

- Players make players.
- Warm up your shot.
- Get to the rim.
- Develop a variety of finishes.
- Attack from different spots with differing techniques.
- Take full ownership of your growth.
