Basketball Education: Make "Key Takeaways" Stick

Content. Communication. Reception. More transmission doesn't always translate to more learning.

Say it. Repeat it. Repeat later (spaced). Test it.

Do flashcards work? "Flash cards are strategically designed to enhance and encourage active recall. The format, usually a question on one side of the card and the answer on the other, requires learners to look at one side and recall the information from the other side."

What key takeaways might we want?

  • Core offense - e.g. spacing, cutting/passing, quality shots
  • Core defense - contain the ball, no middle, help/recover
  • Avoid losing - turnovers, bad shots, poor rebounding, fouls
Can we condense information to optimize its transfer?

Examples:

Half-court offense (2) with options (e.g spread, horns)
Half-court defense (2) man, one hybrid
Zone offense
BOBs - 3 (TBD)
SLOBs - 2 (with options)

Example: Horns actions  (Top of Horns)

Elbow get with primary options.

Duke "elbow handoff" series with clearout.
