21st Century Learning - Basketball Applications

Here's a presentation from Slideshare. Some elements have great meaning in our program:

Shifting To 21st Century Learning from Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano

Process
Collaboration (shared sacrifice)
Communication
Accountability
Transparency

In Tuesday Morning Leadership, David Cottrell outlines a five-step approach to getting things done.

  1. Identify the problem.
  2. Determine its impact.
  3. Visualize your desired "end state." (Similar to First, Fast, and Fearless)
  4. Why do we have the problem?
  5. Work through possible solutions.
We can spitball an example.

  1. We are allowing too many points in transition.
  2. We have lost 'x' games because of inability to contain the fast break.
  3. We can't allow more than three baskets per game in transition.
  4. We have 'buddy running', celebrating after scores, looking for officiating calls after misses, poor understanding of who gets back or poor floor balance, lack of maximum effort to get back alert and aware.
  5. We will review the FACTS with players (see #2). We will practice defensive transition every practice. We will change how we contain the outlet pass or the outlet receiver. We will have a formal quiz on transition responsibilities - balance, "shaping up", protecting the basket, challenging '3s'. If you cannot answer the questions, you cannot start the game.
How players learn translates directly to other life skills. When our players can assimilate and execute our emphasis and priorities on the court, they have no excuse not to excel in the classroom and in the community.
