Many people are problem-focused. "What's the matter?" If I were to say, "my team isn't good enough," how does that do anything except possibly scapegoat my players? Identifying problems, while not child's play, tends to be easier than crafting solutions.
Knowing that we allow too many points doesn't define whether it's because of scoring in transition, putbacks, lack of hand discipline leading to free throws, or failure to challenge open threes. Practice and correction must drive solutions.
First things first equates to 'keep the main thing the main thing.' What is the 'main thing?' The best teams compete to succeed every possession. Win this possession.
At some point during our lives, we may transition from pursuit of success to meaning. Leaving a legacy means intent for giving. Phil Jackson expressed it as "basketball is sharing."
Competition inevitably brings adversity. The willingness to leave one's comfort zone, to fail, to fall, and rise again define persistence. Edison's experiments taught him the 999 ways that lightbulbs wouldn't work. Winners persist.
Finding better ways to prepare and execute requires curiosity. Learners study failure and success looking for better ways. "Learn every day."
"Nothing great is ever accomplished without enthusiasm." But it's not enough.
Enthusiasm matters but engagement means more. Success demands both enthusiasm and engagement. "Get in the fight."
