Basketball Friday: Computer Home Screens, Basketball Drill, Set Plays, Development, and More

If only our program worked like our home screens. Point and click. Point on the Kevin Durant icon and buckets appear. It doesn't work that way. Use the analogy of a computer home screen to help our coaching.

Trash. Remember the role of negative thinking. Don't take bad shots. Don't turn the ball over. Don't commit stupid fouls. Move our trash to the trash.

Dock (above). Imagine the bar at the bottom of the screen activates messages, group mail, and our playbook using a program like FastModel Sports.

Shortcuts from Browser (above). Applications like Google Drive contain practice plans, spreadsheets with drills, teaching points, and saved videos.

Applications. Home screen applications could bring up anything from scouting reports to checklists, strength and conditioning programs, or skill development. Just as Don Meyer had three notebooks (basketball, learning, and tribute to his wife), we could have dedicated hardware for basketball.

Drill. 3 x 3 Cutthroat. Promote competition and conversion.

Set Play. Horns TWIST in a collection of Horns Sets from BBallBreakdown via Half Court Hoops. It challenges defenses with sequential ball screens.

Horns opens the middle and has no "natural" weak side. It also flattens the defense with filled corners, threatening corner 3s. The entire video belongs in our Playbook Video spreadsheet

Summary:
  • Advance the story. Don't hesitate to "trash" poor play and less impactful drills and sets. What we eliminate allows for more productive revision.
  • Competitive drills challenge players. Find ways to include "conversion" from O to D and D to O.
  • Include Horns Sets in your online video playbook.
Lagniappe. "Every day is player development day." Exceptional lessons for personal basketball development...deceleration. Remember Pete Newells movement triad of footwork, balance, and maneuvering speed.

Every player wants more minutes, a bigger role, more shots. What are you doing today to bridge the gap between reality and desires?
