Basketball: Teachable Moments, More HS Video Clips

Study 'the truth machine'. I follow Doc Rivers' 13 clip limit. You say, "but everyone knows this." If that's true, then why do we see these game after game

1. "Fall in love with easy" or "the ball is gold." Turnovers are the antithesis of efficiency. Making the simple play matters. We can't overcome "zero percent" possessions against good teams.

2. "Emphasize strengths." Separate with change of pace or change of direction. Dominant-hand hesitation earns a finish.

3. DR FlaPS. Duke taught zone offense as DRIVE into gaps, REVERSE the ball, FLASH into gaps, POST-UP, and SCREEN. An urgent cut sets up a lay down and second chance.

4. "Look ahead" and "water the flowers." Reward the running bigs.

5. Develop a diversity of finishes, either hand, off either or both feet on either side.

6. Just say no. "Don't throw through hands." Most zone defenders have or get hands up. Don't force through the hands.

7. Screen an area or screen the body (head hunt) but get set and do not move, extend arms, or other body parts.

8. "Shorten the pass." The longer the distance and time, the more that can go wrong. Coming to the pass might have drawn a foul or prevented a turnover.

9. Fronting the post fail. If you intend to front the post you need ball pressure AND backside help. Neither happens here.

10."Find your footwork" and "shoulder's game, low man wins." Separate and finish.

11.Overload. BOB vs zone defense. 1-4 high morphs towards 1-4 low and opens the help side corner. Strong concept but the finish goes awry.

12.Avoid risky passes. Probably the two riskiest passes are casual wing-to-top and top-to-low post. But this corner-to-top pass applies.

13."C-A-R-E." Concentrate, anticipate, react, execute. The point guard can see the trap coming. She has an outlet on the right or if the middle opens, she can hit the big and expose a "short roll pass." Usually, you can read the top of the zone and 'see it' before you feel it.

Short-roll passing.
