Basketball: Hustle

Businesses take inventory. Ask players about their inventory of hustle. Hustle may be what you do, but I believe it's who you are.

As a high school senior in a preseason scrimmage, I dove after a loose ball, 'clipping' the opponent and swatting the ball ahead to a teammate for a layup. After the game, a teammate (football player) said, "you totally gave up your body on that." The team voted me Captain, a kid who had never started a game and averaged three points as a junior. How teammates saw that play changed my life.

Basketball's 'holy trinity' are minutes, role, and recognition. Hustle appears on the scoreboard more than the scorebook.

The Celtics' broadcasters Mike Gorman and Brian Scalabrine often refer to hustle plays as Tommy Points, after the deceased Celtic legend. Tommy points are winning plays.

Tommy Points usually lead to stops, possessions, and scores.

  • Saving a ball going out of bounds
  • Winning the 50-50 ball. "There is no 50-50 ball."
  • Taking charges
  • Steals, deflections, blocked shots
  • Defensive fakes that force turnovers
  • Hockey assists (passes that set up assists)
  • Chasing down a guy on a layup
  • Forcing held balls (half a possession changes)
  • Tip out on a rebound or tip pass assist
  • "Screen assist" - screen that leads to a score
  • "Pulling the chair"
  • Digs and doubles that force turnovers or bad shots
  • Avoiding the bad foul... "fouls negate hustle"
Hustle impacts winning.

In "Toughness," Jay Bilas shares an incident where he 'bent over' and an opponent got the loose ball. That shame and embarrassment fueled toughness over the rest of his career.
