Basketball: Philiponia

Lessons take a lifetime to learn.

Love the work, literally the Greek word, philiponiaThe coach's job, to put a team in the best position to succeed, comes with no end. Coach John Wooden used to say that Bill Walton never tired of drilling footwork that allowed him to separate and finish.

Hemingway said, "writing is easy. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." Different domain, but same process...

Parenting is similar. "You are only as happy as your least happy child." A ninety year-old arrives at the office upset. "You are upset. What is bothering you?" The patient says, "my child is getting divorced." "How old is your child?" "Sixty-five." "I think you have to let that go." But a parent is always the parent, regardless of the child's age.

1. Don't work with the expectation of being the best, but your best.

2. Bring energy and energize teammates.

3. After every practice and game, write down three things you did well and one thing that you can do better.

Love the work, yet know that disappointments and failure share the path with success.

Lagniappe. Recovery after injury is science and work. Improve proprioception with balance exercises.
