Basketball: Show Up and "Get To"

"Ninety percent of winning is showing up."

As a second year medical resident, I worked 185 consecutive days. A lot of shifts were 36 hours every three to four days. Keep showing up.

History is replete with stories of unexpected achievement. General George Marshall helped win WW2 by his tireless commitment to logistics - the supply and quartering of troops. Professor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain went from being a Bowdoin professor to the US Army to help win the Battle of Gettysburg and earn a Congressional Medal of Honor. Frances Perkins cared about working conditions and helped pass labor laws and child labor laws. She became the first woman cabinet member as the Secretary of Labor under FDR.

"Champions do extra."

"Do the un-required work."

Lou Gehrig's 2130 game streak included playing with multiple broken fingers.

Leadership means "get to" not "have to."

  • Leaders "get to" prepare.
  • Leaders "get to" teach.
  • Leaders "get to" make every day a development day.
  • Leaders "get to" give and get feedback.
  • Leaders "get to" assure everyone is on the same page.
  • Leaders "get to" run better meetings.
  • Leaders "get to" speak greatness.
  • Leaders "get to" motivate.
  • Leaders "get to" see the big picture and the fine details.
  • Leaders "get to" be lifelong learners.
  • Leaders "get to" model excellence and temperance.
  • Leaders "get to" be accountable.
