Coach Lane used to say that you can't win games by trickery. Although teams with varieties of good execution can be harder to prepare for, that is more about quality than quantity.
Track ways that we've "simplified the game" for players.
1. "You don't get paid by the dribble." Scoring off cuts is one of the highest points per possession actions - that means spacing, urgent cutting, and on-time and on-target passing.
2. Better shots means better scoring chances. Track what 'better shots' are for your team. "Open" three-point shots have no meaning for non-shooters.
3. Limit pick-and-roll defenses. Find your most effective approaches - fake trap (show), trap, drop coverage.
4. Emphasize principles over plays. Everything starts on offense with spacing. When spacing collapses, it makes the defense's work easier. Every defense starts with ball pressure and containment. Penetration makes defense porous.
5. Have clear transition assignments, e.g. two to the glass, protect the basket, stop the ball, beat your guy to half court.
6. During timeouts, limit the points of emphasis. To do your job, you need to know it and to communicate with teammates.
7. "Trust but verify." Get feedback to confirm assignments. The future runs on advice. Now runs on feedback...this is how we do it.
8. Process over results - "the score takes care of itself."
9. Take care of the ball. Turnovers are zero percent possessions and live ball turnovers are high points/possession actions for opponents.
10.Stops make runs. Without stops there is no momentum. Momentum extends leads and fuels comebacks.
