Coach and play with purpose. Add value to scrimmaging by adding constraints and/or teaching elements.
Shot quality scoring (Dean Smith). Scrimmage with scoring for the quality of shot:
1) Open layup - 2 points
2) Contested layup - 1 point
3) Open jump shot - 1 point
4) Contested jump shot - 0 points
5) Turnover - minus 1 point
Advantage-disadvantage "penalty box" for turnovers. Scrimmage five on five, but if a turnover, then player sits out for thirty seconds.
Transition-conversion with three groups of four. Offense attacks defense and after stop or score, defense becomes offense. "Waiting group" near midcourt has to 'convert' to defense, identifying assignments and playing defense. Scoring or getting a stop allows one point for the group. Play to 7 or 11.
Three possession games with offense-defense-offense. Play starts with an ATO, BOB, or SLOB.
"Optimum" - Full court, five-on-five, no dribbling. Turnovers become live ball for the defense. Can play with or without bounce passes allowed. Ball hits the floor equals a turnover with live ball for defense.
Only paint. Scrimmage with only shots in the paint allowed to emphasize scoring closer to the basket.
