Coaches wear many hats - administrator, teacher, recruiter, evaluator, judge, administrator. What boundaries define our ethics?
Consider where "lines" exist and how they're crossed. If you can think it, it has happened. Fill in the names.
- Recruiting violations - personal or by proxy (e.g. assistants)
- Misrepresenting resume and experience
- Personal character violations
- Alcohol and substance abuse
- Legal violations
- Sexual harassment
- Demeaning or assaulting subordinates or players
- Lying to recruits (e.g. recruiting someone as a backup and saying otherwise)
- Bribing or "manipulating" game officials
- Sports gambling
Others don't fit anywhere. A former coach (not basketball) asked us to 'throw' a game to allow his friend's team to make the playoffs. Players taking time off from their families didn't see that positively.
We choose to either "grant" respect by default or "earn" it. Demanding respect using 'title' exudes weakness.
Coaches share the same choices as players - attitude, choices, and effort. We always have a choice on whether to toe the line or cross it. Decide what price you're willing to pay.
