Make friends with the dead. What if we had lunch with Ben Franklin or DaVinci or Lincoln? How would it go? What would we ask and hear? What would we order?
“It’s a great honor to have lunch with you, Mr. Franklin.”
BF: “There are more old drunkards than there are old doctors.”
“Good to see that age hasn’t dulled your sense of humor. I’d love to hear your perspective on coaching.”
BF: “One of my favorite topics - self-improvement. You know about the 13 virtues?”
“Absolutely. Love number 13. You said you could never achieve humility because if you did, you would truly be proud of it”
BFL “Boil it down to this, ‘Well done is better than well said.’ Important parts of coaching are introspection and self-reflection.”
“What do you want?”
BF: “You won’t trip me up on that, Doc. I’ll have a pint and the brisket.”
“Tell me about relationships and coaching.”
BF: “Coaching is collaboration. Find your own path and navigate the inevitable struggles.”
“How about a few pithy quotes?”
BF: - An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
- without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.
- Honesty is the best policy.
- We must all hang together or assuredly we shall all hang separately
- If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.
"Did you have any favorite sporting pastimes?"
BF: "I was pretty accomplished at kite flying."
Lagniappe. Simple action versus a couple of zones...

“Movement is the key to the game. Offense is not just about what you do with the ball, but what you do without it. Players need to be constantly moving, creating space and opportunities." pic.twitter.com/Xh6Kzx47tB
Lagniappe 3. Find players committed to winning not stats.
“It’s not about me, it never will be about me. Whatever the team needs, whatever it is that night, I’ve got to do it and just help us win,” Derrick White
