Coaches talk about "competitors" and "coach killers". There is an old story about Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler who noted that if "you don't get the player you want, he can beat you once a year. You get the wrong player and he kills you every day."
Everyone wants serious players. Serious players are:
1. Ready to go when practice starts...stretched out, physically, and mentally. Urban Meyer calls it "crossing the (red) line" around the field. You cross the line, you're competing or else he dismisses you from practice.
2. Mentally engaged. They know not only their assignments but teammates' assignments. They are always listening, learning, seeking more.
3. Hungry to learn...desiring challenges and willing to leave their comfort zone. They are always searching for ways to improve their game and help their teammates play more effectively.
4. Communicators. Defense without talk is losing defense. But communication extends to all relationships...player to player, player to coaches, and coach to coach.
5. Relentless. They never quit. Adversity doesn't discourage them; it inspires them. They understand that along the journey, plateaus and even backsliding occurs. Adversity is your companion on the journey.
