What's Your Mantra? Your Vision Board, Two Drills, WNBA Set Play Video, and Coaching "Regulation"

What's your mantra? What keeps us motivated? Ours should be uniquely ours. What muse pushes us to be our best?

See everything. Vision and focus are skills. Studies of drapery by Leonardo Da Vinci highlight chiaroscuro, the fine detail of light and shadow. Footwork is art. Fakes are art. Coaching is art.

Consider making a "Vision Board" encapsulating our philosophies. Peloton trainer Robin Arzon counsels messages to be short, meaningful, and positive.

What are we adding? Consider a team vision board where each player contributes.

Drill. Drive, read, and kick

Basketball is a game of "vision, decision, and execution"

"Manitoba rebounding."

Set play. (Carlos Gomez shares a pair of actions)

Lagniappe. Learn from the best, like Chris Oliver's podcast (below) with Coach Nerbun. "deregulated adult will never help regulate another person." Growing as a coach...is more than Xs and Os. It's developing "soft skills" for a hard profession.

"I would have been a better coach if had learned (earlier) to manage my emotions." - Chris Oliver

Athlete retention (complex issues) - "Do they enjoy playing in our program?" - Chris Oliver

"Are we looking to give or are we looking to get?" How can we get the player to become their best (character)?

Agree upon ACCEPTABLE and UNACCEPTABLE (behavior, play, coaching)...meaning shared accountability regarding "boundaries and consequences." A high standard cannot be violated and we will support you.

Nerbun shares how his parents demanded that he recognized sport participation was a privilege. When his grades failed, they pulled him out and worked with him to get his grades to acceptable levels.

The "It's Your Ship" principle. Captain interviewed everyone asking:

  • "What do you enjoy?"
  • "What do you not enjoy?"
  • "If you were Captain, what would you change?"

Lagniappe 2. Do we ask ourselves honestly, "do we have the talent, will, and capacity to get a score or a stop when it's needed?" Excellent teams do and lesser teams don't.
