Basketball: Becoming a Better Teammate

"Everyone can't be a great player. Everyone can be a great teammate." Strong cultures feature unselfishness, direction, and shared joy.

Here are notes from MasterClass on 'Teammates':

"Don't be a room killer." - Jud Apatow (director, comic)

"Don't be a drag in a meeting or an interview."

"They might hate that person because they just complain."

"Think about how you come across."

Application: Seek ways to work together.

Basketball: "What does it feel like to play with me?" Be easy to play with and hard to play against. Selfishness, sloth, and standing makes no friends.

"Bring something to the party." - Marc Jacobs (fashion designer)

"Collaboration is participation...action and reaction...constant sharing of ideas."

Application: Be part of group solutions with constructive feedback.

Basketball: How do you impact winning?

"ROI on Listening." - Ron Howard (director)

"Mine the creative brain power...to elevate the set of choices.

"Storytelling shares aspects of the human experience to reach an audience."

"It cannot always be fun."

"We all want the same thing - a great moment, great scene, great movie."

Application: Build something great together.

Basketball: Winning makes everything more fun.

"Be nice to everyone." - Sam Jackson (actor)

"Be careful of the toes you step on today because they could be connected to the _____ you have to kiss tomorrow.

"Make the day as pleasant as you can."

Basketball: Don't be the jerk on the team.

Application: How you bring it will impact what you get back.

"Always be inclusive." - Herbie Hancock (musician)

"Listen to what others have to say."

"In what context would that idea work?"

Application: I wonder. What if? Let's try.

Basketball: You will probably win more in the short-term by teaching and playing zone defense in youth basketball. And nobody will remember that. Your players who learned good 'man' technique will have a better chance to flourish at higher levels. Let's try.

Summary:

  • Don't be a room killer.
  • Be part of the solution.
  • Want to make something great.
  • Be careful of the toes...
  • "I wonder, what if, let's try."
Lagniappe. The analogy might be to "draw two." Instead, screen two.
