Basketball: Moments

All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. - from As You Like It, Shakespeare

Moments define our lives. Most of us are here because basketball shared resonating moments with us.

Director Ron Howard explains that every great movies has a half dozen memorable scenes. Here's one from Hoosiers.

Journalist Bob Woodward, seeking the "best version of the truth," includes a minimum of six key points in every article.

Psychologist Jason Selk suggests a "highlight reel" of five memorable experiences during pre-game mental workout. He applies to this to professional success:

Personal Highlight Reel: "Take 60 seconds total to visualize success. In the first 30 seconds, create a visual of who you want to be and how you want your life to be five years from now. Be specific and include the most important personal and professional aspects. Then take another 30 seconds to visualize how you want your upcoming day to go. See in your mind a few important successes that will propel you to be on track for exactly where you want to be in five years."

The Heath Brothers wrote a book, The Power of Moments. They include the elements of successful mentoring, "Set high expectations, express confidence in the mentee, provide direction, and assure support."

Some readers achieved pinnacles of the profession, professional coaches, National Player of the Year status, household names. But each of us celebrates personal defining moments - special relationships, academic, athletic, or professional recognition, seeing mentees reach their dreams.

Share credit and thanks with individuals and institutions that helped us along our journey. Let others know that we're eager to help via networking and letters of recommendation. Coaches help make moments.

Lagniappe. Some say passing is a lost art.

Jokic's passing denies that.
