"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride."
I wish Dan Coyle maintained his blog. He has a lot to share with us.
“Hey, after you’re done, would you mind coming by my office and teaching me that?”
With whom would you want to spend an hour with talking coaching? I don't mean X's and O's, drills, or conditioning exercise. "Could you share with me your coaching philosophy, how to get more from others and yourself, and great lessons you've shared and learned?" It wouldn't even have to be a coach, maybe it would be a teacher or a philosopher.
Suggest possibilities.
1. Jack Clark, rugby coach, Cal. I know nothing about rugby, so strategy and skill development has no meaning. Clark has encyclopedic experience with leadership.
2. Karch Kiraly, volleyball champion. Kiraly has elite perspective on both playing and coaching. His emotional intelligence flies off the charts.
3. Sam Jackson, actor. Jackson became a legend not as a minority actor but as an actor. His love of acting and commitment to being his best version shine through.
4. Faith Fitzgerald, professor of Medicine, elite instructor. I met Dr. Fitzgerald as a medical student when she delivered a lecture on IV drug abuse at Boston City Hospital. Years later she agreed to speak at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Her knowledge, teaching, and communication skills are off the charts.
5. Doug Lemov, author, Teach Like a Champion and The Coach's Guide to Teaching. Great coaches add value by teaching skills, game understanding, and motivation.
Lagniappe. Great players adjust. Boston fans are dismayed by Jaylen Brown's playoff turnovers. Video analysis reveals tendencies.
Lagniappe 2. Practice with purpose.
