Mental models help us think better. Develop thought experiments for experience without consequences. Consider asking players for more.
Models can have practical applications.1. Score, time, situation. Lead by three or even less, eight seconds left, opponent's ball, sideline out of bounds.
To foul or not to foul? It depends. If leading as a heavy underdog you don't want to go to overtime. It also depends on the free throw shooter. If they're terrible, the edge increases.
2. Lead by one, thirty-one seconds left, sideline out of bounds, our ball. We are in the bonus if fouled.
What's our plan? Having capable free throw shooters on the floor close and late creates an edge. And basketball is about creating edges.
3. Our team is 18-0, last week in the season. The second best player on the team tells the coach she is going away on a school-sponsored environmental trip for a week. The postseason starts when the player returns.
Can she resume her starting position immediately upon return? Does your school or do you have firm policies on absence, practice and playing time? It's not my place to tell you what works for you.
