Fast Five: Are We Changing the World?
1. We change the world. That's not boasting. We can humbly know we change people...and teams. But we can do so with well-defined intent and purposed designed to build ethical trust (character), technical trust (competence), and personal trust (connection).
2. Success is intentional. We change people with stories and kindness, and humility and purpose. We change players when we don't even know it. "Maybe the biggest moment...was a moment that I didn't even remember."
3. Deliver random acts of kindness. "We let people who have made our lives better walk around without letting them know." If someone is doing a good job, tell them. "Catch people in the act of doing good." A positive message is a powerful act.
4. Authenticity is great...unless... Some feel Aristotle's pupil, Alexander the Great, was murdered consequent to unrelenting ego. Aristotle has forewarned him of the dangers of ego, but fragging remains a real possibility for the ancient conqueror. I believe that "authenticity is great...unless you're an authentic jerk."
5. Model excellence. Emerson wrote, “Your actions speak so loudly, I can not hear what you are saying.” We give our players constant behavioral feedback with our attitude, commitment, communication both verbally and nonverbally, choices, enthusiasm, fairness, punctuality, respect, and willingness to sacrifice. Aristotle wrote, "excellence, therefore is not an act but a habit." Purposeful action adds value when it translates to players.
We should not allow ourselves to be weak when we are powerful.
