We need both strong leaders and productive followers. Strong leadership is not synonymous with great leadership. We can all identify strong leaders (e.g. dictators/despots) who brought ruin to their societies. But leaderships counts. There's a saying that an "army of assess led by a lion can defeat an army of lions led by an ass."
You've probably heard the story about a 12 foot 1 inch high truck stopping at a bridge that is 12 feet high. Every one is perplexed about getting the truck through when a small child gives them the answer...let some air out of the tires.
Learning 'what' to study is insufficient. We need to learn how to think. I'm wading through an iTunesU course on building a culture of innovation. We need to recognize 'what went well', 'what needs improvement', and the value of realistic self-assessment.
Can we generate "one better idea" for our next practice? Someone asked a professor, "how do you spell LOVE?" He answered, "T-I-M-E." When we care about someone or something, we devote time. Great companies like 3M allow a certain percentage of time for creative thinking. Atlassian, an Australian software firm, allows employees a 24-hour 'hackathon' each quarter to brainstorm product solutions.
Do we need to delegate better, drill better, better conditioning, technique, or tactics, improved communication, film study, scouting? Can we find that 'one better idea' today?
