I know a few people who rely on 'title' as their crutch. As Chief Resident in Medicine at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, I had to oversee a trainee that demanded she be addressed by her rank, an ego demonstration overcompensating for lack of competence. That plays poorly with either leadership or subordinates.
Dr. Jill Guindon-Nasir shares her views on leadership.
A couple of excerpts:
It really does lead back to culture with the leadership because they knew that they were empowered, they were engaged, and they were taken care of ...
We select the right people and then we basically get out of their way. We let them do their job and we believe in them and we encourage them and they’re empowered...
Comment: Dr. Guindon-Nasir's emphasis reflects 'leader's intent', trust, the value of 'hiring tough', and promoting initiative among employees (fellow coaches and teammates). Real leadership shows up and makes it happen every day.
